Project Overviews
This course will be divided into four projects, as follows:
A1 Research and Design Opportunities (3 weeks)
Early in the semester, the professors will present the project concept and lead brainstorming tasks related to activities, environments, interactions, objects, and users. During this initial three-week project, the class will form teams and conduct research related to users, products, and emerging technology and research as it affects product behavior This project will culminate in research presentations and identification of future product opportunities.
A2 Concept Exploration and Development (3 weeks)
Building on the results of A1, teams will brainstorm ideas, sketch 50-100 concepts, choose three to develop deeply, and select one of the three for further refinement. Each team will communicate their ideas through a series of critiques, class discussion, and postings on the web site.
A3 Concept Selection and First Iteration (3 weeks)
Building on the concepts selected in A2, students will construct the first iteration of the final product. Where possible, experiential prototypes will be employed to understand aspects of product behavior and functionality, and to allow for early exposure to potential users.
A4 Evaluations and Second Iteration (3 weeks)
Building on the concept developed in A2, students will revise and improve the first iteration of the final product. Additional evaluations will be conducted to glean next steps relative to product development.
The Final Product Prototype, Scenario of Use, and Final Presentation will be shaped in the final two weeks of class. This vision will demonstrate how the product would work and what kind of experience it would embody, and will be the basis for the selection of the team who will attend the Design Expo in July, 2003.
