Assignment 2: Concept Exploration and Development
Building from early research insights, the class will break into development teams, and perform additional research. Then, teams will brainstorm ideas, and develop three into concepts illustrated through the use of scenarios. This assignment will culminate in a critique where each team selects a concept for further development. During this project we will also instantiate the web site to communicate our rapid design explorations to our Microsoft clients.
Rapid and rigorous design exploration is a critical part of the project, so it is important to stay on schedule.
Part 1. Rapid ideation and concept development
Team will rapidly explore the design space created by the research findings and the research charrette. Each team's goal is to generate several opportunity statements, many, many early sketches, and three resolved concepts accompanied by scenarios of use. As you work on ideas, think of the following:
- Who is the audience for your product?
- What community will your product enhance? How?
- What activity (reinforced by direct research) does it enhance?
- How does the product improve current experience?
- What qualities of experience does the product offer?
- What values does the product uphold?
- Why is this product better than anything that is currently on the market?
You may find it helpful to use the AEIOU model (activities, environments,
interactions, objects, users) for brainstorming.
Part 2. Web site development
Teams will finalize the structure of their web sites, and will implement them for weekly communication with the client. Web site updates must be uploaded each Monday by noon. First due date is Monday 2/10/2003. Note: You may choose to use MessyBoard to handle some "at a glance" aspects of this task.
.
Educational Goals
The goals of this project are as follows:
- to rapidly explore a design problem space, generating sketches both individually and as part of a team
- to analyze and group sketches to emerge with the strongest product concepts as solutions to the design problem;
- to practice communicating ideas among ourselves and to clients;
- to design and implement a team communication site.
.
Deliverables
The deliverables for this project are as follows:
- 36 initial sketches/concepts per team
- 3 developed sketches/concepts per team
- 3 scenarios per team
- report detailing additional research that was conducted
- initial posting of the communication site and weekly updates.
