Wecome to Seido Karate Pittsburgh

Seido Karate is a traditional style of Japanese karate, founded by Kaicho T. Nakamura and distilled in over 35 years of study, practice, and teaching. A seido dojo is a special place where the sincere way of karate is practiced. The goal of seido karate is individuals working with each other to improve in body, mind, and spirit, and to realize the fullness of human potential.

Seido Karate Pittsburgh was founded in 2001 at Carnegie Mellon University. The club is led by Sempai Jodi Forlizzi, a second degree black belt in Seido Karate with over 20 years experience in the martial arts. For more information about Seido Karate, please see

Weekly Schedule

Our weekly schedule for the fall, 2007 semester is as follows:

Monday, 5:00-6:30 pm
Wednesday, 11:45 am-12:45 pm
Thursday, 5:00-6:30 pm

All classes meet in the Martial Arts room, 2nd floor, of the Skibo Gymnasium on the Carnegie Mellon campus.

During the CHI2007 conference, several of us made a field trip to Sensei Bobby Henderson's dojo. Training was held at the Hakone Gardens in Saratoga, CA.

Dojo News: Pittsburgh Seido Karate Participates in Saiten Celebration

In June, 2006, Pittsburgh Seido Karate members traveled to New York to participate in the Seitan festival celebrating 30 years of Seido Karate. Students participated in a roundtable discussion, seminars, a world family tournament, and a demonstration. Congratulations to Ian Li and Bilge Mutlu, who won places in sparring and kata, respectively.

Dojo News: Pittsburgh Seido Karate travels to Chicago for Thousand Waves 20th Anniversary Celebration!

In October, 2005, five Seido students traveled to Chicago to participate in Thousand Waves' 20th Anniversary celebration. Events included seminars, a tournament, and an awards dinner. Congratulations to Matt Easterday, who placed second in green and advanced green belt sparring, Ian Li, who placed second in yellow and advanced yellow belt kata, and Jodi Forlizzi, who placed second in women's middleweight black belt sparring.

Sempai Debbie Gould joins Pittsburgh Seido Karate!

Sempai Debbie Gould, a sandan at Thousand Waves Seido Karate, has joined the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Sociology. Pittsburgh Seido Karate is honored to have Sempai Debbie joining the ranks as assistant instructor of the group.

Dojo News: Seido Karate Pittsburgh begins 2004 with Kagami Biraki

On a snowy afternoon in January, Seido Karate Pittsburgh celebrated "kagami biraki," or "open mirror," with a lively workout focused on the basics of our art. Sempai Jodi delivered a short speech, outlining her goals for the dojo for the year and giving a brief news update from Honbu and Chicago. In addition, each student briefly outlined his or her goals in karate for the year. We are looking forward to a prosperous year in 2004, filled with kicks, punches, and spirit!
